What was confirmed

The Australian Government confirmed that the National Planning Level (NPL) for 2027 remains at 295,000 new international student commencements, the same as 2026. It also said no active international education provider will receive a lower allocation in 2027 than it did in 2026.

What it means for students

The NPL is a planning tool that sets how many new students providers can enrol, not a cap on individual applications. You still apply for a visa in the usual way. In practice, allocations are why course places at some providers can fill early, so applying early is sensible.

Funds you must show

The figure for a student visa applicant has been AUD 29,710 for 12 months since 10 May 2024, with additional amounts for a spouse, children and school costs. No change has been announced in the sources we reviewed. Confirm the current number on the Department of Home Affairs site before you lodge.
